Description

Soft and chewy sugar cookies are buttery, tender, and easy to make with simple pantry ingredients. These classic homemade sugar cookies bake up with soft centers, lightly crisp edges, and sweet vanilla flavor, making them perfect for holidays, parties, or everyday baking.

Ingredients

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 cup granulated sugar, for rolling

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix until fully combined.

5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix just until a soft dough forms.

6. Scoop the dough into balls, about 1 1/2 tablespoons each, and roll each one in the extra sugar.

7. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between them.

8. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until the edges are lightly set and the centers no longer look wet.

9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Do not overbake these cookies if you want them to stay soft and chewy.

Room temperature butter creams more smoothly and gives the cookies a better texture.

Rolling the dough balls in sugar before baking gives the tops a pretty sparkle and a delicate crisp finish.
