Description

This Delicious Chocolate Buttermilk Cake is a moist, rich, and easy homemade chocolate cake with buttermilk, cocoa powder, and creamy chocolate frosting. Perfect for birthdays, holidays, or anytime you want a soft chocolate layer cake with deep flavor and tender crumb.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 cups granulated sugar

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup hot coffee or hot water

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

3 1/2 cups powdered sugar

1/3 cup heavy cream or milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease and line two 9 inch round cake pans.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.

4. Slowly stir in the hot coffee or hot water until the batter is fully combined. The batter will be thin.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.

6. Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.

7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

8. To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy.

9. Add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar gradually, mixing well after each addition.

10. Pour in the heavy cream or milk and vanilla extract, then beat until the frosting is fluffy and spreadable.

11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread frosting over the top.

12. Add the second cake layer and frost the top and sides.

13. Slice and serve once the frosting is set slightly.

Notes

Use room temperature eggs and buttermilk for a smoother batter and a more even bake.

Hot coffee deepens the chocolate flavor, but hot water works well if you do not want to use coffee.

Cool the cake layers completely before frosting so the frosting stays thick and smooth.
