Description

Best Easy Sugar Cookies are soft, buttery, and simple to make with everyday pantry ingredients. This easy sugar cookies recipe gives you tender vanilla cookies with lightly crisp edges, making it perfect for holiday baking, cookie trays, or an anytime homemade dessert.

Ingredients

2 3/4 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3 to 4 tablespoons granulated sugar for rolling

Optional sprinkles or icing for decorating

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

2. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix until smooth and fully combined.

4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until a soft dough forms.

5. Cover the dough and chill for 30 minutes.

6. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

7. Scoop tablespoon sized portions of dough, roll into balls, and coat lightly in granulated sugar.

8. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each one.

9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden and the centers are just set.

10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Do not overmix the dough once the flour is added, or the cookies can turn out less tender.

Chilling the dough helps control spreading and gives the cookies a smoother shape.

For softer cookies, remove them when the centers still look slightly soft because they will continue setting as they cool.
