Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
1 medium yellow onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices provolone or cheddar cheese
4 hamburger buns, toasted
Optional: pickles for topping
Instructions
1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat and sauté onion until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
2. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
3. Add ground beef, break it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain excess grease.
4. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, tomato paste, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, and beef broth. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
5. Season with salt and pepper.
6. Reduce heat and top beef with cheese slices. Cover the skillet until cheese is melted.
7. Toast hamburger buns and spoon meat mixture onto the bottom bun. Add pickles if desired, then the top bun. Serve hot.
Notes
Let the beef simmer long enough for the sauce to thicken and deepen in flavor.
Use freshly toasted buns to avoid sogginess.
Provolone adds a mild creaminess, but cheddar brings a sharp edge—choose based on preference.
