Description
This steak grilled cheese recipe is the ultimate comfort food, made with tender steak, melted cheddar and provolone, and crispy buttery bread. Perfect for lunch, dinner, or an indulgent snack, it’s packed with bold flavor and easy to prepare. Keywords: steak grilled cheese, cheesy steak sandwich, leftover steak sandwich.
Ingredients
1 cup cooked ribeye or sirloin steak, thinly sliced
2 slices sourdough or Texas toast
2 tablespoons salted butter, softened
1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup caramelized onions (optional)
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
1. Slice the cooked steak into thin strips. If using onions, caramelize them in a pan with butter until golden and soft.
2. Butter one side of each bread slice and sprinkle the buttered side with garlic powder.
3. On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer half the cheese, then the steak, onions if using, and top with the remaining cheese.
4. Close the sandwich with the second slice of bread, buttered side facing out.
5. Heat a skillet over medium-low heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and cover with a lid to help the cheese melt evenly.
6. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is fully melted.
7. Let rest for a minute before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy.
Notes
Use leftover steak to save time and add extra flavor.
Provolone melts smoothly while cheddar gives a nice sharpness—combine both for best results.
Covering the skillet helps melt the cheese without burning the bread.
