Ingredients
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn syrup
1 loaf French bread or brioche, sliced thick
5 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. In a saucepan, melt butter with brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth and bubbly. Pour into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Slice the bread and layer it over the caramel base in the dish. Slightly overlap for a snug fit.
3. Whisk together eggs, half-and-half, vanilla, and salt in a large bowl.
4. Pour the custard over the bread, pressing slightly to soak. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
5. In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F. Bake covered for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake another 15–20 minutes until golden.
6. Let cool slightly and serve warm with caramel side up.
Notes
Use brioche or challah for the best texture and flavor.
Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving to allow the caramel to set slightly.
Customize with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg, or add fruit between layers.
