Ingredients
2 cups whole milk
1 cup granulated sugar
6 egg yolks
2 cups heavy cream
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 to 3 tablespoons bourbon or spiced rum
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and milk over medium heat. Stir constantly until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Do not let it boil.
2. Remove from heat and stir in heavy cream, vanilla extract, and ground nutmeg. Let cool to room temperature.
3. Cover and refrigerate the mixture for at least 4 hours or overnight until well chilled.
4. Once chilled, stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons of bourbon or spiced rum. Taste after 2 tablespoons before adding more.
5. Pour the mixture into your ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 6 hours until firm.
7. Let sit at room temperature for a few minutes before serving for extra creaminess.
Notes
Keep the alcohol under 3 tablespoons or the ice cream may not freeze properly.
Use freshly grated nutmeg for a more aromatic flavor.
For a fun twist, serve this ice cream in between two gingerbread cookies.
