Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
1. Cream the butter and powdered sugar together until light and fluffy.
2. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using), and mix until smooth.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt.
4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until dough forms.
5. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick and cut into shapes.
6. Place cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 8–10 minutes until edges are lightly golden.
8. Let cool completely before decorating as desired.
Notes
These cookies hold their shape perfectly, so they’re great for cookie cutters.
If you want crispier cookies, bake an extra minute or two.
They freeze well—just don’t decorate before freezing.
